PAVO seeks a Deputy Executive Director (Executive Director–in-Training) to support association operations, governance, and strategic leadership while preparing to assume full Executive Director responsibilities. This position is intentionally structured as a leadership succession role, providing progressive exposure to executive management, Board relations, financial oversight, and member services within a national sports‑officials organization.The Deputy Executive Director works closely with the direct report - the Executive Director.
The dynamic nature of this position requires that the ideal candidate will interact seamlessly and with a professional demeanor across a broad range of individuals including the current Executive Director, members of the Board of Directors, senior association staff, association members, Affiliated Board leadership, and other staff and contractors who report to the Executive Director to ensure operational continuity, organizational effectiveness, and long term sustainability.

Position Description
The Deputy Executive Director is a full time, remote position designed as a four- to six month transition pathway to the role of Executive Director. The selected candidate will work closely with the current Executive Director to gain comprehensive knowledge of PAVO’s operations, partnerships, governance, and strategic priorities. Upon successful completion of the transition period, the Deputy Executive Director will assume full responsibilities as Executive Director.
Core Responsibilities
Under the guidance of the Executive Director, the Deputy Executive Director will:
- Support overall management and daily operations of the association, including staff, contractors, and remote operations
- Assist in strategic planning and implementation in partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors
- Support governance functions, including Board communications, meeting preparation, and policy implementation
- Assist with financial oversight, including budgeting, financial reporting, dues and fee collection, and compliance with established controls
- Support member services, certifications, affiliated board relations, and responses to member inquiries
- Contribute to association communications, publications, and website content
- Assist with planning and execution of major association initiatives, including the annual PAVO Volleyball Officials’ Convention
- Support the development, interpretation, and application of bylaws, policies, ethical standards, and due process procedures
- Gradually assume executive decision‑making authority as delegated
Qualifications
An effective PAVO Deputy Executive Director will demonstrate the following required skills:
- Demonstrated leadership capacity with readiness to grow into a senior executive role
- Experience in nonprofit, association, or sports‑related organizational management
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Working knowledge of governance, financial management, and regulatory compliance (or demonstrated ability to develop this expertise)
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while collaborating with volunteer leaders and Boards
Education and Experience Requirements
- Minimum of five years’ experience in association management, nonprofit leadership, or a related field
- Experience working with or supporting a Board of Directors is strongly preferred
- Advanced degree required; MBA or M.Ed. preferred
- Familiarity with sport officiating or volunteer driven organizations is helpful but not required
