Training Camps

PAVO Officials Training Camp Program

Purpose: To offer on-court officiating opportunities, with constructive feedback from experienced officials, to the official who desires improvement of skills and career advancement.

PAVO has been offering training camps for several years throughout the country, in various venues. Camps are held in conjunction with both NCAA Division I spring tournaments, collegiate club and junior spring and summer events. Camps offer on-court training opportunities, and may provide an opportunity to officiate a higher level of play than the camper has previously experienced. Annual plans usually also include at least one "Advanced Collegiate Training Camp", which is intended for the experienced referee who is seeking the next level of skills and expertise. The Advanced Collegiate Training Camp application process is explained below.

Click here for more information on camp scholarships that are available.

The camp experience offers the following:

  • A chance to officiate with officials from other areas of the country
  • Evaluations without the intensity of a rating session
  • Feedback from seasoned evaluators
  • An atmosphere conducive to learning and fun!

At many camps, the camper will be videotaped (with audio-feedback) during their on-court experiences. After completing the camp, campers have the option of having summarized evaluation information sent to conference coordinators and assignors across the country.

Take advantage of this opportunity as a camper or potential staff person by online registration.  Click on the "2014 Referee Training Camps" tab at the PAVO E-Store,  email PAVO@pavo.org or contact Miki at the PAVO office 888/791-2074.

Joint USAV/PAVO Premier/Advanced Camp

A Joint Premier/Advanced Referee Camp by USAV/PAVO will be held at the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation tournament (NCVF) in Reno, Nevada, starting the evening of April 2, 2014, and will continue through April 4, 2014 (and the end of play that day). The registration fee for this USAV/PAVO Premier/Advanced Referee Training Camp is $285.  All campers must have a minimum: 1) USAV Regional rating and Regional Chair Recommendation to attend this event, 2) PAVO State rating and Board Chair Recommendation to attend this event, or 3) national-level referee certification. We anticipate that most campers will be national candidates or other national-level referees planning to advance to a higher level, strength rating or conference.  This would be an appropriate camp for National-level USAV referee candidates or national PAVO referee candidates who want to be evaluated before the national ratings at the GJNC, or a PAVO National Rating Site.  Registration for those meeting the above criteria is accepted on a first-paid, first-accepted basis only.  Campers are responsible for their own travel expenses; however meals and lodging during the camp will be paid by NCVF.

It is a requirement of this premier/advanced referee camp that all participating campers will be available to officiate for pay on April 5, 2014, at the NCVF tournament.

Campers will attend a classroom session Wednesday evening and then be observed and evaluated in the first and second referee positions on the following days.  Campers will also have the opportunity to work with score sheets and round out the training with activities to help prepare them for their next advancement. After each set of matches, the campers will be debriefed with video and have the opportunity to discuss the matches and ask questions of the National Trainers. Members of the training staff may be available throughout much of the NCVF to answer questions. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn the latest techniques and rules from some of the top trainers and officials in the country.  Space in the camp is very limited, so register for the camp now! If you have questions, please contact Thomas Hoy (thoy@satx.rr.com) or Doug Darling (OTP.camp.director@PAVO.org).
