Training Camps

PAVO Referee and Line Judge Training Camps Program

Purpose: To provide officials, both referees and line judges, with on-court officiating opportunities in a low-pressure atmosphere that allows for expert instruction and growth feedback from the nation’s top-level officials. Participants should be challenged to learn and develop new officiating skills and a better appreciation of the intricacies of volleyball officiating.

Since 2002, PAVO has been offering officials' training camps. Geographic diversity and competitive variation are important components to the decision-making process. Camps are held each Spring in a variety of tournament settings--women's collegiate play, men's and women's collegiate club, and juniors. By design, we strive to appeal to officials of all skill levels by offering on-court training opportunities that may expose the camp participant a higher level of play than they have previously experienced.

Online registration through the PAVO E-Store is mandatory for all camps.

Selecting the Camp That's Right for You!

The camp experience offers the following:

  • A chance to officiate with officials from other areas of the country
  • Evaluations without the intensity of a rating session
  • Feedback from seasoned evaluators
  • An atmosphere conducive to learning and fun

At most camps, the camper will be recorded (with audio-feedback) during their on-court experiences. After completing the camp, campers have the option of receiving the videos from their training either by AirDrop (iPhone and iPad users) or by email. Those wishing to have their summarized evaluation information sent to conference coordinators and assignors have that option as well..

REFEREES can choose from three different levels of camp so that skill level can be appropriately matched with the skill level of the tournament participants. All levels of referee camps include multiple opportunities to work as both first referee and second referee as well as a pre-tournament meeting and a specialized classroom and on-court trianing session the evening before the tournament.*

LINE JUDGE camps offer opportunities to develop and enhance skills while working a high level of competition. All line judge camps include a pre-tournament meeting and specialized classroom session the evening before the tournament.*

*Campers should plan to arrive at the site no earlier than 4:00 PM on the first day. Departures should not be planned for earlier than 8:00 PM on the day of the tournament.

DEI Officials’ Training Camps (Currently Invitation Only)

PAVO has been conducting training camps for volleyball referees and line judges since 2002. PAVO has always been committed to forging stronger connections by bringing people, opinions, and ideas together. Similarly, promoting and practicing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is nothing new to PAVO. PAVO continues to actively address differences in the officiating culture created by social barriers and biases. PAVO’s DEI Officials' Training Camps are being incorporated as a complement to traditional training camp programming with content and leadership focused on recruiting, training, and promoting men and women from historically underrepresented or marginalized groups. In 2022, PAVO launched a multi-year camp endeavor in collaboration with conference coordinators to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in our sport’s officiating cadre. As the discussion surrounding the topic of DEI increases, PAVO will continue to build diversity, equity, and inclusion in volleyball officiating and training, and emphasize DEI as a core value, not just as a side project. By actively encouraging each individual or group to contribute and participate, inclusion creates a culture where everyone feels welcome and has opportunity. This open, accepting environment encourages and values individuality and treats everyone with respect in both words and behavior. If you would like to be considered for a PAVO DEI Camp, please contact Wade DuBois, PAVO Camp Director, for more information.

Refund Policy

If you are unable to attend a camp for which you have registered, PAVO will attempt to fill that slot with a replacement camper. If another camper is found to fill that slot, your camp registration fee will be fully refunded. If PAVO is not able to find a replacement camper, you will receive a refund of 50% of the registration fee, and the other 50% may be applied toward a future camp (based on availability).

Camp Scholarships

PAVO Officials' Training Camps have been highly successful in helping develop the quantity and quality of the cadre of officials across the nation. In support of this cause are the availability of camp scholarships. These scholarship funds are awarded to deserving officials to help offset expenses associated with camp attendance - usually, the registration fee is covered in full. Completed applications for scholarships must be submitted no later than April 15.

Scholarship Application Process
Any PAVO member in good standing may apply for a camp scholarship. Electronic submission of application and recommendation forms can be completed by emailing Wade DuBois, PAVO Camp Director.
