PAVO Referee and Line Judge Training Camps
PAVO has offered referee and line judge training camps since 2002. The purpose of PAVO Training Camps is to provide referees and line judges with on-court officiating opportunities in a low-pressure environment. Our camps offer expert instruction and feedback from the nation’s top-level collegiate volleyball officials. Participants should be challenged to learn and develop new officiating skills and acquire a better appreciation of the intricacies of volleyball officiating. Geographic diversity and competitive variation are important components of the decision-making process. Camps are held each spring in a variety of tournament settings — women's collegiate, men's and women's collegiate club, and junior's levels of play. By design, PAVO strives to appeal to officials of all skill levels by offering on-court training opportunities that can expose our camp participants to higher levels of play and provide invaluable tools and resources for them to achieve the next milestone in their collegiate officiating career.
Selecting the PAVO Camp That's Right for You!
The PAVO camp experience offers the following:
- The opportunity to officiate with officials from other areas of the country
- Evaluations without the intensity of a rating session
- Feedback from conference coordinators and National-level referees and line judges
- An atmosphere conducive to learning and fun
REFEREE CAMPS are offered at three different levels (Advanced Referee Camps, Collegiate Referee Camps, and Referee Camps), and they are intended to reflect the respective experience and skill level of the participants. All referee camp levels provide multiple opportunities to work as both a first referee and a second referee, as well as a specialized classroom session and on-court training session the evening before the tournament.
LINE JUDGE CAMPS offer opportunities for line judges to develop and enhance their skills while working a high level of competition. All line judge camps include a specialized classroom session and on-court training session the evening before the tournament.
All camp participants are provided live, in-match feedback from our camp staff. The camp staff will also conduct thorough post-match debriefs with all camp participants, which are geared to provide the participants with newfound or refined skills and knowledge that will help propel their officiating repertoire to the next level. Video recordings with live commentary from the camp staff are provided at Advanced Referee Camps and Collegiate Referee Camps. At these specific camps, participants will receive a keepsake USB drive with videos of their matches. After completing a camp, participants have the option for their summarized performance evaluations to be sent to the conference coordinators and/or assignors of their choice.
2025 PAVO Camps - Registration Now Open!
Prospective camp attendees — please visit our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page!
Beginning in 2025, camp attendance will be limited to one camp type per person (e.g. one referee camp (any level) and/or one line judge camp per person during each camp season). PAVO strives to continually grow and expand our camp program. However, feasible camp sites can be difficult to obtain. Spots at camps are limited and fill up very quickly (sometimes within just 24 hours). We want to provide the opportunity to attend a camp to as many officials as possible.

Discovery Training Camps (Currently Invitation Only)
PAVO has conducted training camps for volleyball referees and line judges since 2002. PAVO has always been committed to forging stronger professional connections by bringing people, opinions, and ideas together. PAVO also remains committed to creating and supporting environments in which diverse participants can compete and work in an atmosphere of tolerance, civility, and respect for the rights and sensibilities of each individual regardless of personal characteristics and beliefs.
Discovery Training Camps are the evolution of a multi-year camp endeavor PAVO launched in 2022 in collaboration with several conferences and their coordinators — all sharing in a vision of creating opportunities for training and exposure where it may otherwise be limited. Discovery Training Camps are conducted in partnership with a sponsoring entity. They are incorporated as a complement to the traditional PAVO Officials’ Training Camp programming with their content and leadership focusing on recruiting, training, and promoting individuals from historically underrepresented or marginalized groups. This open, accepting environment encourages and values individuality. Through a recommendation and nomination process, campers are invited to participate. Nominations and recommendations are generated through formal outreach to Conference Coordinators/Assignors, PAVO Affiliated Board Chairs, and USAV Referee Chairs. If you are interested in attending or sponsoring a PAVO Discovery Training Camp and would like more information, please reach out to PAVO’s Director of Camp Programming, Breanna Spain, at camp.director@pavo.org.

Refund Policy
If you are unable to attend a camp for which you have registered, PAVO will attempt to fill that slot with a replacement camper. If another camper is found to fill that slot, then your camp registration fee will be fully refunded. If PAVO is not able to find a replacement camper, then you will receive a refund of 50% of the registration fee, and the other 50% may be applied toward a future camp (based on availability).
Camp Scholarships
PAVO Training Camps have been highly successful in helping develop the quantity and quality of our cadre of officials across the nation. In support of this cause is the availability of camp scholarships. Scholarship funds are awarded to deserving officials to help offset the expenses associated with camp attendance (usually, the registration fee is covered in full). Completed scholarship applications must be submitted no later than April 15, 2025.
Scholarship Application Process Any PAVO member who attends a camp and is in good standing with their board may apply for a camp scholarship. The application and recommendation forms are submitted electronically. Please send any questions about the scholarship application process to the PAVO Camp Director, Breanna Spain.
